Contact sports are a hot topic with concussion protocols getting a lot of press. However there are many injuries associated with contact sports of the arm, head, legs, back the list can go on. In a resent study they looked at whether the contact element was causing the injuries by foul play or if it was just the contact mechanisms in the sport causing the injuries. They found, contact — but not foul play — was the most common mechanism associated with moderate and severe injuries. Head, hand, shoulder and ankle injury were mainly sustained during direct contact. This is extremely interesting and brings the question whether we could prepare ourselves for contact sports better with padding or with exercise techniques to prevent falls etc.
