Medical Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment involves fine needles being inserted through the skin which are then briefly left in position.  The number of needles required varies and may be only two or three.  Treatment is tailored to you, as an individual.

Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle, and can produce a variety of effects.  It increases the body's release of natural painkillers in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain.  This modifies the way pain signals are received.

You may feel a tingling or a dull ache when the needles are inserted but shouldn't experience any significant pain.

Acupuncture is often used to treat other musculoskeletal conditions (of the bones and muscles) and pain conditions, including:

  • chronic pain
  • joint pain
  • dental pain
  • postoperative pain
